MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

70.1 TRANSFER QUALIFICATIONS: One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Salary Grade 12 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.

70.4 TRANSFER QUALIFICATIONS: 1. One year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service in a position allocated to a Salary Grade 12 or higher. 2. A passing score on the Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee exam and 3. Must meet the minimum qualifications of a Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee*. Note: Candidates must not have failed the most recent examination for this title

PROVISIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

For the Safety & Health Inspector:
Either 1. a bachelor’s degree or higher AND one year of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR one year of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR one year of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement;

Or 2. an associate’s degree AND three years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR three years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR three years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement;

Or 3. five years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR five years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR five years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.

For the Safety & Health Inspector Trainee:

Either 1. a bachelor’s degree or higher;

Or 2. an associate’s degree AND two years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR two years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR two years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement;

Or 3. four years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR four years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR four years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.

55 B/C: This position may be designated 55b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Please provide a copy of your 55b/55c letter when applying.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee. You may be required to have your physical and medical conditions evaluated annually to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

FINGERPRINTING/BACKGROUND CHECK: Some positions may require a fingerprint/background check. If the position you applied for requires fingerprinting, you will be advised at the time of your interview. There is no cost to candidates, fingerprinting fees are paid for by the Department of Labor. Candidates being considered for appointment will be provided a pre-paid code and instructions after the interview.

Duties Description

Standard Duties:
As a Safety and Health Inspector in the Division of Safety and Health, with our HERO Unit, the incumbent will:
Plan, schedule, and conduct safety and health inspections of selected work sites such as state, county, city and town offices. Conduct inspections of places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosive magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations. The inspections are conducted in order to assure conformance with established standards, identifying unsafe conditions and work practice, and to protect workers and the public. Under direct supervision, the Safety and Health Inspector Trainee will receive on-the-job training while performing duties similar to those described for the Safety and Health Inspector. Upon satisfactorily completion of a one-year traineeship, the incumbent will advance to the position of Safety and Health Inspector without further examination.


Additional Comments

NOTE: As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.

Additional location pay is available for the following counties: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.
